50 Reasons Why People Stay Broke

Being broke is ghetto.
If you have been broke, or still are, I’m sure you can agree.
But we don’t HAVE to be.
I’ve heard people say “business is a numbers game,” and “it’s easier to make a lot of money in a short amount of time, than it is to make a little money over a long period of time.”
And a lot of people would say that that’s not true, or that it’s easy for a rich person to say that. I used to think that way too.
Until I’ve learned this lesson:
In order for you to make a lot of money, you have to BECOME THE TYPE OF PERSON that makes a lot of money.
So the first thing we need to do to break out of the “brokeness” is to break out of the broke mentality and BECOME the type of person that can make and maintain the type of money we desire.
It’s a complete change of lifestyle, identity shift, and requires that we take the life we want of by force.
So to get started, I think we should keep in mind of some reasons why people stay broke.
Here’s a list of 50:
💸 50 THINGS KEEPING YOU BROKE
(EVEN IF YOU’RE WORKING HARD)
🧠 MINDSET & BELIEFS
- Thinking hard work alone = money (it doesn’t)
- Believing you’re “bad at sales” instead of learning how to sell
- Avoiding money conversations because they make you uncomfortable
- Thinking charging less or giving discounts makes you more “accessible” (it just makes you resentful)
- Not believing you’re good enough to charge premium rates
- Thinking you’re bothering people by promoting yourself
- Letting perfectionism delay your launch, post, or pitch
- Comparing your Chapter 1 to someone else’s Chapter 20
- Not seeing yourself as a real business owner
- Being more committed to staying “comfortable” than getting paid
💬 OFFERING & SELLING
- Selling things people don’t want or understand
- Making offers that don’t solve a clear problem
- Relying on low-ticket services to hit high-income goals
- Not giving people a reason to buy now
- Talking about the features instead of the benefits of your offer
- Waiting for clients to find you instead of going to find them
- Not offering payment plans or ways to say YES easily
- Only selling when you’re desperate for cash
- Never asking for the sale—just hoping someone clicks the link
- Making your offer all about YOU instead of the client’s transformation
📱 VISIBILITY & MARKETING
- Posting content but never selling
- Showing up inconsistently and expecting consistent income
- Creating “pretty” posts with no message or direction
- Not showing your face—people buy from people
- Trying to market to everyone, which speaks to no one
- Assuming people know what you do without telling them clearly
- Getting discouraged if one post doesn’t pop off
- Not building an email list or nurturing the one you have
- Not using video, even though it builds the most trust
- Waiting until you’re “ready” to go live, pitch, or show up
📉 SYSTEMS & STRUCTURE
- Not having a plan
- Forgetting to follow up with leads
- Not automating simple parts of your business and life
- Winging your pricing, packaging, and policies every time
- Spending too much time in your business, not on your business
- Not tracking what’s working (or what’s wasting your time)
- Not setting monthly income goals (so there’s no target to aim for)
- Letting customers bargain and negotiate your prices
- Thinking you can do everything yourself
- Never batching or pre-scheduling content to stay consistent
🚫 ENERGY & SELF-SABOTAGE
- Being inconsistent
- Quitting too early
- Not celebrating wins (big or small), so nothing ever feels like enough
- Over-delivering to prove your worth instead of owning it
- Saying yes to the wrong clients out of fear of missing out on money
- Staying “busy” instead of being productive
- Avoiding the things that actually move the needle (selling, pitching, promoting)
- Not investing in tools or coaching that could collapse your timeline
- Waiting for motivation instead of building discipline
- Surrounding yourself with people who don’t believe in you or understand your vision
Which of these have been a struggle for you? Being inconsistent has been the main challenge for me. But not for long!
